Strike Out Arthritis is a philanthropic event that is hosted by the sorority Alpha Omicron Pi on college campuses nationwide. It is traditionally a baseball themed event, however several chapters have changed or tweaked the event to best fit their campus – for example some chapters have changed the baseball theme to another theme, such as bowling or another sport that would raise more money and gain more support for the cause. The main reason for having the event Strike Out Arthritis is to raise money and awareness for Alpha Omicron Pi’s national philanthropy – the Arthritis Foundation. As a member of Alpha Omicron Pi at Virginia Commonwealth University, we hold our Strike Out Arthritis event at the Diamond during a Squirrels game. We raise money by tabling and selling tickets to friends, families, and peers on campus and then the entire chapter and everyone that bought a ticket from us attends the baseball game to show our support and raise awareness for our philanthropy. The national Alpha Omicron Pi website states: “Alpha Omicron Pi launched its Strike Out Arthritis! campaign as a platform for chapters to build philanthropic events that would both raise funds for the cause and promote the Fraternity’s commitment to “striking” out arthritis in the search for a cure.” I considered this event to be a cultural event because it brought together lots of different kinds of people for a shared cause, to help raise money and awareness to find a cure for arthritis. It was a really fun time going to watch the game and help spread awareness.
